The name comes from the ancient rocky settlement of Macurano or Magorano, the "c" version name is actually in use, an ancient site of cave and crypts, placed under the Montesardo's hill. The settlement Macurano was certainly one of the most important rural and monastic centers all over Salento; settled since the VIII Century by monks of S. Basilio, that came from Turkey after a furious war iconoclastic. The members of this religious order lived as hermits, they spent their time studying and working in agriculture.
